Overall the Miners signed 20 prep stars to national letters of intent, 17 from the state of Texas. Also being announced today is the addition of two signees who have already enrolled.

Leon Hayes and Darnell Murray, featured in the photo, have enrolled at UTEP for the spring semester and will participate in spring drills. Hayes was the number No. 9 prospect out of the state of Nevada according to Rivals. Murray was the Mountain Pass League Defensive player of the year and team defensive MVP at Citrus Hill High School in California.

“Character first was our motto in recruiting this year,” Price said. “We investigated each players’ background thoroughly, and I was very impressed by them as a whole.

“Our second emphasis was being able to tackle in open space, and the defensive players that we signed can certainly do that.”

One of the biggest holes for the Miners with this recruiting class was running back and Price’s staff certainly addressed that with the addition of Paul Franklin (Denison, Texas/South Oak Cliff) and Autrey Golden (Willis, Texas/Willis).

Franklin was the District 11-4A MVP after rushing for 1,600 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior. Golden, a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, was a two-time All-District 18-4A first team selection (2010 & 2011).

Teammates Ernest Hawkins (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) and Terrance Williams (Dunbar, Md./Dunbar) led Dunbar High School to consecutive state titles and three crowns in four years. Hawkins was a All-State second team member who compiled 120 tackles while Williams also earned placement on the All-State team, recording 10 interceptions, 10 touchdowns, three pick sixes and a pair of punt and kickoff returns.

A Top-300 Texas player, Garrett Simpson (The Colony, Texas/The Colony) broke eight of his school’s nine records for quarterback during his prep career.

UTEP Press Release:

EL PASO, TEXAS – UTEP Director of Athletics Bob Stull announced on Thursday that coach Mike Price will return for the 2012 season – his ninth year at the helm of the Miner football program.

One of only two coaches to lead the Miners to three bowl games, Price is the nation’s sixth-winningest active head coach with 174 victories. With 45 wins at UTEP, Price is one victory away from tying Mike Brumbelow (1950-56) for the second-most in school history.

In 97 games under Price’s direction, the Miners have averaged 30.4 points and 397.8 yards of offense. UTEP has had more 30-point (53), 40-point (23) and 50-point (six) games under Price than any other coach in UTEP history.

The Price era has produced UTEP’s all-time leader for passing yards (Trevor Vittatoe), total offense (Vittatoe), receiving yards (Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jr.), all-purpose yards (Howard Jackson) and the single-season rushing champion (Donald Buckram). The Price era has produced seven of the top-10 single season total offense totals in school history, five of the top-10 passing yardage averages and seven of the top-10 point totals.

In 31 seasons prior to Price’s arrival (1973-2003), the Miners averaged 2.6 wins per year with four years of five or more victories. UTEP has averaged 5.6 wins under Price with six years of five or more victories.

The Miners return 11 starters, including seven on offense, for the 2012 campaign.</itunes:summary>
